DJ Monica, born in Umeå is regarded as first female DJ in Sweden. She began spinnin records 1983 at Universum (Umeå) where she was resident DJ for a 10-year period. Monica celebrated 40 years as a DJ 2023 and if you ask her how long she´s going to perform she answers: I have just begun!
DJ Monica is working at the funkiest clubs in Sweden – like Café Opera & Hamburger Börs – but what is most important – she has dedicated her deepest love and respect to music.
Monica started to mix her music from day one because she wanted the audience to dance in a flow. In the 80´s – most DJ´s used a microphone and talked like a radio DJ between the records and most of the discotheques had record players without pitch control. So, it was kind of tricky to beat mix in the beginning.
DJ Monica has been in love with Funk since 1976 when she first discovered ”The Clones Of Dr Funkenstein” by Parliament – and – she has been promoting Disco, Hip Hop, Electro & R&B since the beginning of their era. DJ Monica has her musical roots in American Funk music with artists like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins plus in the R&B and Hip Hop that was developed during the 80’s and 90’s. She loves new school and old school, Disco and positive music with a lot of Soul & Bass.
Monica´s Swedish musical mentors are DJ Sydney “Big Brother” Onayemi (R.I.P) and the famous Sveriges Radio host Mats Nileskär – P3 Soul. Her favorite tune of all time is “Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy by The Brides Of Funkenstein, produced by George Clinton.
DJ Monica is Royal Warrant and has been DJ:ing for the Swedish King & Queen on several occations. She has also hanged out with George Clinton, who is as good as Royalty – if you ask her.
She was a member of the DJ collectives Sister Stockholm, Love Boat and Soul Train. The later, she was one of the founders of in 2010.
DJ Monica is producing her own music, edits and mashups and are streaming live on Twitch. She´s DJ in the Club Funkateers Show – a TV Podcast with Bootsy Collins and his wife Pepperminte Patti – and they release new episodes every week on XOTV & Youtube.
